Why did Louis XIV purposely turn his nobles into a ‘useless elite’ (i.e. intendants)? I?

King Louis was afraid that the nobles had too much power. And could have easily take him out of power. By making them do useless things they were distracted from doing anything that could lead to take him out of power.
