What goes on in the mind of a bulimic person?
It's to do with the person feeling out of control. In know it sounds weird, but bulimics use the destructive eating pattern to feel in control over their lives. They may be stressed or upset so comfort eat to make themselves feel better. Then they feel guilty and ashamed because they have lost control over themselves. That is why they "purge" - in their mind it is to maintain a balance or erase whatever they have done. the most common purging is self-induced vomiting, but they can also use laxatives, fasting, enemas and diuretics. In fact anything that will rid their body of the food that they have just taken in. The binging becomes an addiction that is almost impossible to break; whenever that person feels upset or whatever they automatically go on a binge because they know that it will comfort them, then they feel guilty/ ashamed so they purge and the cycle continues.
